Do I require a permit for burning?

Yes, an Open burn permit is required prior to any outside burning.  This can be obtained from the Township Office by stopping in or calling the office at 519-773-5344 (ext. 241).  Permits can be obtained for a 1 to 10 day length of time.  If it is a one day permit, we will forward the permit directly to dispatch.  If the permit is for two or more days, you must call the dispatch office at 1-800-511-9911 before you begin each burn.  You are no longer required to call after your burn has been completed, the permit expires at midnight.

Failure to obtain this free permit is in contravention of the Ontario Fire Code.  If convicted of an offence for the contravention of the Fire Code, a fine of not more than $50,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of not more than one year, or both may be imposed.

Open Burning Permits are not available in areas of concentrated residential development.

How does the Flashing Green Light relate to Fire Services?

Volunteer firefighters are permitted to have a flashing green light in their vehicles.  The green light indicates that a firefighter is on their way to a fire, car accident or other type of emergency call. The green light is a “courtesy light” and motorists are asked to be aware of the firefighter’s vehicle and when it is safe, allow the firefighter to proceed.
