2010 MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Bill 212 - The Good Government Act received Royal Assent on December 15th, 2009. The Act consisted of Amendments to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. The amendments included the following:
Voting Day
Voting Day is now the 4th Monday in October. In 2010 VOTING DAY WILL BE MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2010.
Nominations
Nominations must now be filed by 2:00 p.m. on September 10, 2010 (the 2nd Friday in September).
Withdrawal of Nominations
A candidate must withdraw their nomination by 2:00 p.m. on September 10, 2010 (the 2nd Friday in September).
Accessibility
The Clerk shall ensure that each voting place is accessible to persons with disabilities.
Compliance Audit Committee
The Municipality must establish a Compliance Audit Committee by October 1st.

The Nomination and Campaign Period commenced on January 4, 2010.

Nominations are to be filed with the Clerk or designated Election Official at the Municipal Office, in person or through an agent from January 4, 2010 to September 9, 2010 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Nomination Day (September 10, 2010) the prescribed filing time is 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Nominations must be on the prescribed form (Form 1) and accompanied by the prescribed fee. The filing fee is $200 for the office of the Mayor and $100 for all other offices. The prescribed fee is payable by cash, debit card, certified cheque or money order. Credit cards or non certified cheques will not be accepted.
Also, candidates will be required to provide photo-identification when submitting the nomination forms.
AM I ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?
To be eligible to vote in the Municipal Election, a person must be:
- a Canadian Citizen
- at least 18 years of age on Election Day
- a resident in the Municipality, or owner or tenant of property in the Municipality,
or spouse of such owner or tenant
