Municipal Assessments/New Landowners

The municipality can provide you with your current property assessment value.  The municipality does not set this assessment value.  The assessment value of a property for tax purposes is determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).  If you have any further questions and or discrepancies of this assessment this can be discussed wtih an MPAC representative at 1-866-296-6722 or by visiting their website at www.mpac.ca or by email at enquiry@mpac.ca

** To ensure that your assessment remains as Farm Land, you have to apply annually for Farm Property Class Tax Rate Program.  If you fail to apply annually, your assessment will be changed to Residential.

New Landowners and MPAC Ownership Changes

1.  Please note, the Township of Malahide only changes ownership upon written   notification from MPAC (the assessment office).  Your lawyer will notify MPAC, who in turn will notify the Township of Malahide

In the interest of serving the Ratepayers in a more prompt manner, the Township will also accept a lawyers' written notificaiton of an ownership change. However, it is important to realize that any changes made by MPAC will override the lawyer's written notification.

2.  Specifically ask your lawyer to determine if it is your responsibility to pay the taxes including any arrears.

3.  Contact the Township office at 519-773-5344 to determine if the change of ownership has been made and to determine the status of your account.  It may take several months before MPAC advises the Township Office of this change.  You may need to contact the Township several times.  Township Staff will only provide you with the financial status of your tax account when you appear as the owner on the Township records.

4. Confirm other pertinent data with the Township such as; the mailing address, establishing the account as Pre-authorized Payment or confirming the tax payment will be received from your Mortgage Company.

5.  Once the ownership has been changed, request Township Staff to send you a copy of the most recent unpaid tax bill.  Ask the Staff to advise you of any arrears or future installments.  It is your responsibility to contact the Townshp Office and request the financial status of your tax account.
